September 29 - Habakkuk 1-3
Did you notice the format of the book of Habakkuk? It is in a question and answer format. What does that say to you? I believe that it is much more than a literary device used by the prophet to write his book. It shows that Habakkuk was used to asking God questions and hearing a response from God. That is remarkable considering it is Old Testament. If this exchange was possible then, how much more now that we have the Holy Spirit living in us all of the time? I do believe God wants us to live in a constant conversation with Him. We are to pray without ceasing, and prayer is a conversation with God. Remember, a conversation is two ways, both giving and receiving information.
What did God tell Habakkuk? He said that He was finally going to punish His sinful people by sending the Babylonians to conquer them. Then, He let the prophet know that He would not let Babylon get a free pass either. They would be punished for their pride and idolatry. In the midst of this conversation there are several significant revelations. Look at Habakkuk 2:4. Does it look familiar? It should. Faith has always been the key to our relationship with God, and it will always be the key. What happens when we really experience God's presence? Look at Habakkuk 3:16. It is an awesome experience that causes us to tremble. When was the last time you trembled in God's presence? Finally, look at Habakkuk 3:19. In the midst of the death and destruction this is the testimony of Habakkuk. God gave him strength and lifted him above the conflict around him. I pray that is your testimony today.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Zephaniah 1-3.
