Singing about the Lord
I love music. I am not a musician. I can't play anything except a radio or an app on my phone. I can sing a little, but it is not a great strength. However, when I sing it does something inside of me. It brings back memories, and it allows me to express what is in my mind and my heart at the same time. This is especially true when I sing Christian music about the Lord. God must have created music to help us express ourselves to Him.
David was a musician. He played the harp and other instruments. He was also a singer. We wouldn't think that would be the case for a great warrior, but it was. (Psalm 59:16) David declared to the Lord that he would sing about His power. He told God that each morning he would sing with joy about His unfailing love, because God had been his refuge, a place of safety when he had been in distress. This verse struck a chord with me, so maybe it will help you, too.
Most of us enjoy going to worship with other believers. We love singing the great hymns of the faith and the contemporary songs that exalt the Lord and His Word. There is just something about the unity of being together in the same room and raising our songs to the Lord of all. It picks us up and draws us closer to God. If we disobey God and fail to assemble ourselves together with other believers on a regular basis, we are not only sinning, but we are depriving ourselves of spiritual power.
However, in this psalm I believe David is revealing to us what he did in the mornings to draw close to the Lord. He sang about God's power. He sang with joy about God's unfailing love, which caused him to remember all of the times that God had been his refuge, his safe place in times of distress. I can just imagine David playing his harp and singing about God as part of his unhurried time. I believe we could all benefit from singing to the Lord as we wake up each morning. If we don't already have a song in our heart that would help one be there all day long.
