Fulfilling God's Purpose for Us
I have written a lot about the fact that God has specific things He has planned for each of us, as believers, to do each and every day. I thoroughly believe this is true, and I believe we need to start every day by praying and asking God to show us those things and how to do them. (Ephesians 2:10) However, I haven't written about God having a purpose for us to fulfill in a while. I believe it is just as important for us to know God's purpose for us as it is to know the specific things we should do.
It sounds like David knew about God's purpose for him and his need to fulfill it. In the midst of all of his troubles he kept this in his mind and his heart. (Psalm 57:2) David cried out to God Most High, to God who would fulfill His purpose for David. Here we see two clues about purpose. We each have one, and God has to be involved in fulfilling His purpose for us. Therefore, we know we cant do it alone, but we must seek to know it and do what we can to fulfill our purpose.
So what do you think God's purpose is for you? For the past 50 years I have been confident that God's purpose for me was to be the best pastor I could be for the church He had sent me to pastor. Now that seems to be coming to an end, perhaps, so I am asking God to show me my new purpose. I am confident like David was that He has one for me, if He doesn't want me to be a pastor. When I know it, I will ask for His help, and I will do what I can to fulfill my purpose.
Maybe you have been a husband or a wife, but now you are a widow or widower. God is not done with you. He has a purpose for you as a single person. Your children may have grown up, so being a parent to children and raising them well is no longer your purpose. It could be your purpose is to be a parent to your grown children and a grandparent now. How will you let God fulfill that purpose? I believe we have to find our purpose and strive to fulfill it with God's help, or we will waste the time God gives us. That is a terrible sin. We must redeem the time by using it for God's glory.
