The Making of a Great Leader
The truth is that all of us are leaders in one way or another. We may be a leader at our job, or we may be a leader in our family. However, there is someone for us to lead in some way. The question is, "Will we be a great leader or a bad leader.?" I am afraid many people fail in being leaders because they don't understand that becoming a great leader doesn't just happen because of our position. There is a process to becoming a great leader.
Moses was a great leader, and he turned over that role Joshua upon his death. Then, God started showing Joshua how to lead the people. (Joshua 3:7) The day the people were to cross the Jordan river and enter the Promised Land, the Lord told Joshua that He would begin that day to make him a great leader in the eyes of all of the Israelites. They would see that God was with Joshua just as He had been with Moses. This verse shows all of us some important insights into being a leader.
Some people say that leaders are born leaders because of their character traits. I don't believe that is true. A great leader is made over a period of time by having successes in leading the people. This process begins with the first success and continues to build the more successes that follow. With each success the people ascribe to the leader a credit, so he can build up credits over time which give confidence to the people. Then, even if he makes some mistakes, he has some of those credits to spend, and the people still consider him a great leader.
However, the most important factor in being a great leader is God's presence and guidance. When people see that God is with a leader, they are willing to follow that leader into difficult situations. It is not just that they trust the man himself. They trust that the Lord of the universe is with Him, so they can follow with confidence. This is why most great leaders are very humble. They realize they could do nothing on their own, and they give God all of the credit for what is done. This humility is cultivated over time by having a close walk with God on a daily basis. All of these things go together to make a great leader.
