A Correct Understanding of God

Our understanding of God is very important. There is only One True God. We can't make up who we want Him to be or what we want Him to be like, we must come to know the truth about Him and His ways. Then, we can fully trust Him and have the right kind of relationship with Him. It is clear from Nehemiah's prayer that he had a very good understanding of God. This guided His prayer, so that he prayed to the One True God, and He prayed in the right way. (Nehemiah 1:5) Let's see God through the eyes of His servant, Nehemiah. It will be great for all of us who are seeking to walk with Him and serve Him today.

God is the God of heaven. God created "the heavens" and the earth. He resides outside the realm of earth in a perfect place we call heaven. However, He has come to live on earth in the tabernacle, the temple, and in the hearts of believers, but He has always been in heaven, too. We might say, "How is that possible?" He is "The Great and Awesome God." He is so much greater than we are, we can never comprehend everything about Him. He is able to be in heaven and everywhere in the world at the same time. He is able to be with each of us, giving us 100% of His attention at the same time. He is so awesome. This great and awesome God is love, so He seeks a relationship with each of us, too. We enter a relationship with Him through a covenant. We make a commitment of our life to Him and He makes His commitment to be our God. He always keeps His covenant, and He is always faithful to those who love Him back and keep His commands. That is how we love Him. We keep His commands out of love, not duty. Those who do not love Him and keep His commandments are rejecting His covenant, choosing to trust in themselves instead of God. Their commitment is to themselves or something else, not God. I believe if we see God and His way of operating like Nehemiah, it will help us to have a great relationship with Him.
