Holy Ambition

Elijah was the greatest prophet in Israel. His faith was so strong that he was fearless when confronted by hostile kings. His miracles were beyond what anyone had seen since Moses and the exodus from Egypt. He was truly a holy man of God.However, he wasn't prefect. He had his weaknesses, so God brought him a companion to help him in his ministry. His name was Elisha. He was faithful to Elijah in every way. When God was about to take Elijah up to heaven in that fiery chariot, he would not leave Elijah's side. Finally, they crossed the Jordan River, and Elijah asked him what he could do for him before he was taken away by God. Elisha's answer stunned Elijah. He asked that he would be a holy man "just like Elijah," his life repeated in him. (II Kings 2:9) That was a huge request, but it showed his pure heart's desire, and God granted his plea. May we all have such holy ambition.

Who is your spiritual mentor? Who is your example of how a Christian should live, the person from whom you can learn? Is it your ambition to be just as holy as they are, or even more holy than they are? I believe we should all have at least one person like this in our life, and we should strive to grow to maturity, where we achieve many of the things they have achieved spiritually. I know we all have different tasks in life, so we can't do exactly what this person did. However, we should strive to be the person they were in their walk with the Lord. That is why Jesus had disciples. It is why Paul had Timothy. Paul could not force Timothy to become like him, though. Timothy had to have this holy ambition, which he did. The Bible tells us that he was the only one who had the same heart as Paul. What a compliment Paul gave his son in the ministry! I pray we all hear such a statement about us one day.
