The Almighty

John was exiled by Rome to the prison island of Patmos because of being a Christian. As he spent the rest of his earthly life there, he went on worshiping the Lord. One Lord's Day as he was in the Spirit the risen Lord Jesus appeared to him. John did his best to describe Him for us and to record what the Lord told him to write. Jesus even gave John a wonderful description of Himself for all of us to ponder and to understand. ( Revelation 1:8) Let's dive into this for a few minutes.

Jesus said "I am the Alpha and the Omega." Immediately we see Him giving us the name of God, "I AM." This is what God told Moses when He was sending Moses back to Egypt to deliver Israel from bondage. This means God is eternal. Jesus also introduced Himself as the Alpha and Omega. That means the beginning and the end. These are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. Therefore, He is the beginning and ending of everything. He is the Lord God. The word Lord denotes the Ruler of all. "The One who is, who was, and who is to come." Jesus is no longer bound by time, now that He has risen. He exists eternally in the present tense, whether it is the past, the future, or the present. He sees everything in totality, from beginning to end, so nothing takes Him by surprise. He is "The Almighty." There is nothing He can't do except the wrong thing. He is all-powerful. This is a great description of God, and it helps us know Him better, the more we comprehend the vastness of His being.
