Profaning the Sabbath Day

The Lord created the universe and the world with a definite order based on how He had created it. The same is true for us, as humans. God has created an order for our lives, so that our needs are met. The family was ordained by God as a part of this order, so that our need for companionship and procreation would be met. God created us to have a need for rest. Part of that rest is our sleep each night. However, the Sabbath Day is another integral part of His created order, so that our need for rest would be fulfilled. We need sleep each day, and we need a sabbath each week in order to be healthy. That is how God created us. God commanded for us to keep a Sabbath Day each week in the Ten Commandments. This is not to cause us pain, but to help us. Therefore, when we fail to keep the Sabbath Day holy, we are not only breaking His command, but we are doing something unhealthy. Nehemiah had to rebuke the people of Israel for profaning the Sabbath Day by working on the Sabbath. (Nehemiah 13:17,18) This should get our attention today.

When God made the Sabbath Day holy, He set it apart from the other six days of the week to be a day of rest and worship. It helps us put Him first in all we do, and it causes us to stop from our regular work and activities, so we can enjoy needed relaxation. If we fail to do this by doing whatever we want to do on the Sabbath Day, we are profaning the Sabbath. It becomes just like any other day. God hates that, and He will punish us for this, as He punished Israel in Nehemiah's day. If we keep the Sabbath Day, God will bless us, physically and spiritually.  It will help our families grow in the Lord. It will cause the believers to be different from the other people of the world, and they will be caused to take note of that difference. It will be a way to share the Lord with others when they notice what we do. I want to encourage all of us to keep the Sabbath Day, which is Sunday for Christians, and see what the Lord does to bless our lives.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Esther 2-5.
