The Day God Settles Accounts

I am afraid that some believers have the wrong concept of salvation and the forgiveness of sins. Yes, Jesus died to atone for all of the sins of mankind, and when we receive Him as Lord and Savior, our sins are forgiven, so that we are pronounced righteous before God. On that basis, we enter Heaven and enjoy eternal life. However, that does not exempt us from giving an account of all that we do in our lives on earth. There will be a day that God settles His accounts with us, and He will hold us accountable for our sins. (Exodus 32:34) Let me explain so this is very clear.

Jesus told us that each of us will give an account for every idle word we speak. (Matthew 12:36) We will do that on the Day of Judgment. That is the Day God settles accounts with us. He goes over our life with us, so we can give an account for everything we did, whether it was right or wrong. (Romans 14:12; I Peter 4:5) We will be rewarded for the times we did God's will, but we will experience great shame for the things we did not do according to His will. (I Corinthians 3:10-15) Yes, we will be able to enter heaven, but some of us will see the great majority of what we did in life burned up. We will see it and weep over what could have been and what we could have received. That is why we are to be careful to live every day according to God's will, not our own. That is why I John 1:9 is in the Bible. When we sin, we are to confess it to God, so we can be restored to our close relationship with Him and be cleansed from that sin. That means we won't do that sin any more, not that He just forgives our sin, and we go do it again. Always remember, we are saved from sin. We are not saved to continue in sin. God's goal for every believer is that we become like Jesus and live like Him. (Romans 8:29) When we fail, He is there is help us, but we will have to give an account. That "Day" is God's accountability for us, because He knows we need it.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Exodus 33-36
