Cursing Those in Authority

People like to rebel. It is part of our sinful nature. I believe we think that we know better than those in authority, so when we do not like what they say or do, we think it is right to curse them or condemn them. However, God says that we must not do that. (Exodus 22:28) It is never right to blaspheme God or to curse a leader of the people. People in our culture today need to hear this command and take heed. God was explicit, and there was a good reason for what He said to Moses.

God is The Authority over everything. If there is no God, then there is nothing that is right or wrong. I know some people say that we can decide what is right and wrong for us or for our society, but that would only be an opinion based on our preference. It would not be  based on anything absolute. Since God is the Creator, He is the Absolute Authority over all. He established right and wrong, good and bad for all people all of the time. We should respect Him and never curse Him or His decisions. If we do, He is right to punish us for being rebellious against His authority. He does that for our good, since it is always harmful to go against His truth.

The same is true for earthly leaders. God ordained our leaders. (Romans 13) Therefore, their authority comes from God, and we are to listen to them, not curse them. We are to respect the fact that God has placed them in a position of leadership, even if they are not good leaders. We can disagree without being disagreeable. We should obey them in every way, unless they tell us to disobey God or His Word in some way. We should pray for them if they go against God and let God deal with them Himself. He put them into authority, and He can remove them, if it is His will.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Exodus 23-25.
