The Consequences of Stiffening Our Necks
We have the choice of whether to listen to the words of God or not. When we stiffen our necks toward the Lord and His word, we are deciding not to hear what He is saying, no matter what. That condition of our hearts leads God to bring disaster upon us. (Jeremiah 19:15) When this happens to a country, God sends disasters on the cities and the towns. Therefore, we must guard against having stiff necks.
Pride leads to having a stiff neck. Also, when we are so sinful that we refuse to turn away from our sins, we are stiffening our necks against the Lord. We are so selfish that all we want is to get our way and to enjoy the pleasures of sin. That is what happened to God's people in Jeremiah's time, because they we following the false gods which promoted all types of sinful behavior in their worship. The same is true in America today. Our culture is overcome with pleasure of every kind. People get hooked on the pleasures, so they do not want to hear from God or anyone else that they are acting in a sinful way that brings eternal destruction. They think up all kinds of reasons not to listen to the Lord and His word. Please, do not allow yourself to fall into this trap. Keep your hearts clean and your minds open to hear from the Lord and obey Him completely.
