A Famine in the Land

One of the ways that God punished His people in the Old Testament times was to send a famine on the land to get their attention and call them back to Him. Sometimes, it was a famine of bread or a famine of water. Those were devastating times, like in the days of Elijah. However, the most devastating famine for any country is a famine for hearing the words of the Lord. (Amos 8:11) That is what He did to His people in the days of Amos, and it could be that He is doing that to us today.

Some people do not hear the words of God, because their hearts are hard, and when they do hear the words of God, they do not sink in. At other times, people are simply apathetic, so that they do not read the words of God or even go to church. Then, the sad fact is that even when some people do attend church, they do not hear the words of God taught or preached. They hear personal stories and opinions of men, but not the words of God. In any event they are deprived of hearing God's Word, so they cannot apply it in their lives and benefit from it to become Christians or to become godly believers, if they are Christians. That will totally destroy a culture and a country, because the words of God are the only source of real truth and all wisdom comes from God to us through His Word.

Therefore, if you are hearing the words of God, you are receiving the most precious food available to feed your soul and spirit, so you can become strong in the Lord. Please, cherish it and hide it deep in your hearts that you might not sin against God, but be holy, as He is holy.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Jonah 1-4.
