A Sacrifice of Thanksgiving to the Lord

How often do we tell God that we are thankful for all He does for us? In the Old Testament times the believers would offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to show God their gratitude. (Leviticus 22:29) Today, our sacrifice is the fruit of our lips confessing our thanksgiving in word or in song to the Lord. However, I wonder how often we miss a very important part of giving thanks.

When we give thanks, we are to offer it of our own free will. That means it must not be out of duty, and it must not just be done at church because it seems to be the right thing to say or sing. It must some from our hearts, because we freely choose to express our heart of thanksgiving to the Lord. This is true even when we pray at home. Do we simply thank God as we pray, because that is our habit? I am convinced that God looks at our hearts, and if we do not offer our thanksgiving from our own free will, it is not accepted by God.

Let's make it a point to choose to offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord of our own free will often and in various ways, so it never becomes a ritual or just something we do.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Leviticus 23-25.
