Jehoshaphat's God

King Jehoshaphat had a clear understanding of God's nature. He showed us his intimate knowledge of God, when he called out to God because of the huge enemy army that had gathered to attack Judah. His prayer begins with a question that is loaded with meaning. It is not so much a question for God, but a question to remind himself of who God is.(II Chronicles 20:6)

Jehoshaphat cried out to the Lord God of his fathers, because he knew that God had made a covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Then, He had continued to be faithful to that covenant. He knew that God was in heaven. He was seated on His throne ruling over all the kingdoms of the nations. The king understood that God was full of power and might, so that no one was able to withstand Him. Jehoshaphat knew exactly who his God was. He knew He could do what he was going to ask Him to do. That is how it should be every time we pray.

God looks for our faith when we pray. If we doubt His Lordship or His ability to answer our prayer, why do we pray? It is good to begin our prayers by praising God, so that we remind ourselves of how awesome He is. Then, we will not hesitate to depend on Him for whatever we need.

In the case of Jehoshaphat, God so answered his prayer that Judah won the battle without even having to fight. They put the choir in front of the army, and God caused the enemy armies to fight themselves, so that no one was left. What a miracle! God can do the same for you today, if you really trust Him, and it is His will to bless you in that way.

Tomorrow, I intend to read II Chronicles 21-24.
