The Nature of Love

As I have taught many times over the years, love is not a feeling. It is not something that comes over a person, and then, you are in love with another person. It is not something you can't help. Also, it is not lusting for what another person can do for you.

Love is a conscious decision to put the needs of another person before your needs. It is something that we can decide to give to anyone, whether or not they are attractive to us or we like them. Yes, at first we are attracted to people by their looks or their personality. That is not love. Love is when we decide to care about them and to elevate their needs above our needs. After we begin to love someone, we do have feelings that follow.

God is the best example of love. He is love. He did not need us, but He loved us, so He gave Himself to die on the cross for our salvation. He did not care about Himself. Jesus left the comforts of Heaven and died the most cruel death because He loved us, and He wanted the best for us.

The Bible is clear about love. Many people are unclear about love. We all need to consider the true nature of love. Then, we need to apply ourselves to love our family, our friends, and those around us with the love of Christ.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Jonah 2-4.
