Waves of God's Anger

It is not good to be around angry people all of the time. I feel so sorry for the ladies who tell me that their husbands are angry with them and complaining about everything all the time. The anger just drains us of the joy we need to live well, and it causes us to lose hope that things will ever get better for us or for the angry ones. It is a miserable state of being. However, it is not as bad as having God's anger on us all of the time.

The psalmist was lamenting the fact that God was angry with His people for all of their sins. He was crying out to God to hear his prayer and take away the anger. (Psalm 88:7) He told the Lord that His anger was weighing him down. Wave after wave of anger was coming upon him, and he was engulfed in God's anger. I imagine the psalmist felt like he was drowning in God's anger. I remember feeling like I was going to drown in water when I was younger, so this word picture speaks volumes to me. I pray it will speak to us today.

As believers, we need to make sure that we are not making God angry by what we are doing or what we are not doing. We have the Holy Spirit who convicts us of sin, righteousness, and judgment. Therefore, we have no excuse for not knowing we are making God mad. We must listen to the Spirit, and when He shows us something we have done wrong, we need to confess it and repent of it, so God's anger will be taken away. The same is true when we fail to listen to the Spirit to do the right things.

If we haven't been doing those things, I can see how we would be engulfed in God's anger and weighed down by it. Therefore, if you have that feeling of lacking joy and hope, I urge you to cry out to the Spirit to show you your sins right now, and make them right. He will show you any lies, greediness, and rebellion. He will show how you have hurt others and need to seek forgiveness. He will show you any of the things that upset God. Please, live with God in such a way that His anger will not weigh you down.
