The Meditation for Our Worship
I wonder what most of us, as Christians think about most of the time? I am afraid that our thoughts are not focused on God as much as they should be. Even more importantly I wonder what we think about when we are worshiping the Lord? Are we thinking about if we like the music or not? Are we focused on how the pastor is dressed or how he is presenting his message? I believe we would do well to put those kind of things out of our minds and meditate on the unfailing love of God instead.
That is what the psalmist said was the practice of God's people back then. God inspired him to write this for all of us, so we could benefit from it, as well. (Psalm 48:9) "Oh God, we meditate on Your unfailing love as we worship in Your temple." I think this verse may contain a key to real, satisfying worship that most believers have been missing, and that is why our worship is not as effective for us as it should be. Let's unpack this verse a little.
We are supposed to worship God because He is worthy of our worship and praise. Why is God worthy? He is worthy of all of our worship because of His unfailing love. It was His unfailing love that brought Jesus down to earth to die and rise again to free us from our sins. It is because of His unfailing love that Jesus is interceding for us all of the time. His unfailing love is there for all of our needs every day. Therefore, when we gather at church to worship, we should keep our minds meditating on the unfailing love of God, not allowing it to drift to other things.
I believe this is also true for our personal times of worship, our "unhurried times" with the Lord. Are we meditating on how we want the Lord to answer our prayers for ourselves and others? Yes, we should pray for these things, but in the process we need to be meditating on His unfailing love. Our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit now, so we should pray as we meditate on God's unfailing love, so we know that God will do the right thing in love. That should give us hope and assurance that God always has and always will act in His unfailing love.
