A Glorious Destiny

I believe all of us want to see our lives turn out good. One way or another we want to have a good future. We want to fulfill our destiny. Some people look at the concept of destiny as something that is determined in advance, apart from our control. Others see our destiny as the result of our decisions in life, so that we control our own destiny. I think it is probably a combination of both of these realities.

The psalmist seems to give us a glimpse into how this works. I am not sure exactly what he had in mind, but I believe he was thankful to God for how his life was going and how it was going to end up, as well. (Psalm 73:24.) He affirmed that God was guiding him by His counsel, leading him to a glorious destiny. If we could all say that same thing, it would be wonderful. Let's consider what this verse says to us for today.

We  can't live our lives well by depending on our own intellect and power. If we try to do that, things fall apart over time, even if some things go well at first. Since God is the One who created us, and since He is the Only One who can see the big picture of everything at once, we need to depend on His counsel. The great thing is that He is there for all of us. He has promised to give us His wisdom liberally, if we will ask, so we can be guided the right way. I pray we are all following the counsel of God for us every day.

Then, once we come to know Christ as our Lord and Savior, we have a glorious destiny. Of course, that means that we will end up in heaven with the Lord. However, even before we enter eternal life in heaven, we can have a glorious destiny here on earth, if we will follow God's counsel. He will guide us to do the right things, so that we prosper in the things that are important. We can have loving families, fulfilling jobs, and we manage the resources God gives us for His glory and our good. I can't think of a better destiny than those two outcomes.
