Defend My Innocence, O God
We all face hard situations in life. We say and do things that people can take the wrong way. We have people who attack us unjustly. We don't know what to do because we are slandered by those people, and others are told things to hurt us. It is at those times that the only thing we can do is to live a righteous life and run to the Father to defend our innocence.
Job knew this as he listened to his friends speak badly about him. They supposed he had sinned since he was suffering so badly, but that was not the case. Others turned against Job, too. Job went to God. (Job 17:3) "You must defend me, O God, since no one else will stand up for me." We can feel the desperation in his words, and we can relate because we have felt that way before ourselves. Let's ask God to teach us through this.
We are hurt by what other people say and do, because we want to be loved and accepted. As wonderful as that is, the main thing is for God to accept us and be pleased with us. If we are right with God, and He knows that we are doing our best to do His will, then the approval of others is not nearly as important to us. When we know God is on our side and He will defend us, we can stand firm in the storms of life. That is why we run to the Lord in these situations.
Also, we can't change the gossip that goes around about us. There is no way we can go to each person who has been told unjust and negative things about us and get them to change their minds about us. We need for God to defend us and vindicate us in their eyes. He can and will do that when we will righteously before Him. He will show others that what has been said about us couldn't be right. That is one of the greatest blessings we can get from God in this life.
