What Sets Us Apart

I am sure there is something distinctive about each of us that causes us to be set apart from other people. Some of us are very outgoing, while others are very shy. Some of us have great academic skills, and we win awards for that. Then, there are the athletic or artistic types who are recognized for their abilities. However, what is the best thing that others can notice about us that would really set us apart from most people in the world?

Moses hit the nail on the head when he was talking with God about God going with them to the Promised Land. (Exodus 33:16) Moses asked God, "How will anyone know that You look favorably on me - on me and on Your people - if you do not go with us?" Then, Moses declared to God, "For Your presence among us sets Your people apart from all other people on the earth." For us, as Christians, today this is still very true.

We will always be distinctive and set apart if we have a vital daily relationship with the Lord. If His presence fills us, because we have the Holy Spirit in us to empower us and guide us, others will see the difference in our attitudes and actions and in our words. In fact, they will see it in the expressions on our faces. God's presence going with us sets us apart from everyone who doesn't know Jesus.

This is especially true for the church today. We will not really be set apart as we should be because of our denomination. It won't be because of our doctrine. It will be the fact that all of us as a group have God's presence with us, so that we love others as we should, and we do it with the power of God's presence being with us. That is the only thing that will really get people's attention in the right way. I pray that this will be true for each of us and the churches to which we belong.
