Seek God and Live

Since I do all of my shopping now, I have learned where to find the things that I need. When I make up my shopping list, I put the items in a certain order so I can get them all and not miss anything in the process. Isn't that kind of like life? Don't we have to decide what we are going to seek? Then, isn't our life enriched or diminished by our seeking? I believe that is very much the case for all of us.

As Amos proclaimed God's message to the people of Israel, he made this point very clear. (Amos 5:4) He told them that the Lord was saying to the house of Israel, "Seek Me and live." Then, he proceeded to tell them not to seek all of the things of the world around them and the idols that were all around them. We are called to do the same thing today, if we really want to have a satisfying and fulfilling life, as God designed it to be.

God has given us His Word, all 66 books, for our guide to knowing Him. When we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior, we are given the Holy Spirit, Who illuminates the Bible for us, so can really understand it. We have the ability to pray over everything in our lives. We can talk with the Sovereign King of the universe and ask Him for wisdom and direction. The problem is that many of us are so busy seeking the things of this world that we neglect to seek the Lord. He is the Source of the abundant life, not the things of this world.

At the same time, many people are worshiping idols. I don't mean they are bowing down to a graven image of a god. I mean that their lives are consumed by money, power, recreational activities, sports, and other things because they think those things really give them the good life. They wouldn't dream of living without seeking those things. Therefore, they miss out on seeking the Lord and having real life. We all need to make a list for life, and God needs to be at the top, so we seek Him and live.
