The Beginning of Knowledge
Life is really a lot like going to school. We either learn what we need to know, or we don't. If we don't learn, we will fail at life. If we do learn, we will have some level of success in our lives. That is why we need to understand the beginning of knowledge. We have to get started right, or we will not learn well, and that will have serious consequences for us.
The Bible is very clear about this, and it is the main theme of the book of Proverbs. (Proverbs 1:7) "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, but fools despise wisdom and instruction." If we do not respect our teacher, we will not listen, and we won't learn. That is so true for God. If we do not fear Him, respect Him, and reverence Him, we will not learn from Him.
As we have said, God knows all things. We need to respect Him for that reason, if for no other. He wants to instruct us, so that we have the knowledge we need. Therefore, we begin the process of learning by fearing God and doing what He says. The more we fear Him, the more we will listen and learn. The more we will pray and read our Bible. Everything is based on if we believe in the Lord, and if we fear Him, so that we follow Him closely every day.
The fool is the person who doesn't even believe in God, much less fear Him. He or she thinks they know enough to live well. They despise the wisdom that comes from God, which is the only real wisdom. They make up their own wisdom, and they refuse to receive instruction from God. They only listen to themselves and to other people who think as they think. That is a recipe for complete disaster in life.
