Called to Sanctification

Everyone needs a sense of calling and purpose in life. If we don't have it, we will drift aimlessly through life, not accomplishing anything worthwhile. This is especially true for us, as believers in Christ. When we come to know Christ, it is not just so we will have eternal life and go to heaven when we die. It it to give us a definite calling and a goal to achieve.

The Bible is very clear on this in many passages. This verse is very short but packed with meaning for us. (I Thessalonians 4:7) God has not called us for impurity, but in sanctification. This makes God's purpose for us clear by telling us what we are not called to do, and what we are called to do. Let's take a few moments to consider this.

God did not save us to have us continue in our sins. We have our sins forgiven when we repent and put our faith in Jesus as our Lord and Savior. God's calling is to put away our impurities, our sins, so that we are not like the people of this world. Remember, sin causes us and others harm, so God has not called us for impurity.

God has called us to be holy. The process of becoming holy is sanctification. We are to become more like Jesus by never doing what is contrary to God's Word and always doing the right thing instead. It takes time because we have to learn God's Word, and we have to allow the Holy Spirit to direct us and empower us to be like Jesus. We continue this process until we get to heaven, where we will be free from all sins.
