The Reason for God's Anger
Many people see God as an angry God who is just out to punish us for any little sin. They project on God the same type of anger that we have as humans. They really miss the whole point of the anger or wrath of God. Their wrong assumptions take them away from believing in God, instead of drawing them to Him. That is how Satan distorts the truth. Yes, we are to have the fear of the Lord in us, because we know of His anger and we respect His power, but it should bring us closer to Him and farther from sin. God explained this well to Ezekiel (Ezekiel 5:13) God told him that when He had spent His anger on them and vented His wrath, He would be appeased. By spending His wrath on them, they would know that He had spoken in His jealousy. Now, we see the reason for God's anger. That will help us, if we understand it well.
God is a jealous God. That sounds like a bad thing to us, because human jealousy is usually harmful and selfish. God's jealousy is just the opposite. God cares about us. He wants us to thrive in our lives and live the abundant life. He knows that the only way for that to happen is for us to worship Him alone and serve Him completely. Therefore, when He sees us engage in sins and idolatry, He is jealous to bring us back to Him. He reacts in anger against the sin that takes us from Him, so we will see our errors and repent. He does it to turn us to Him and to give us the best life possible. God's anger is a warning and an admonition to us, so we will benefit from walking fully with Him. It is not to harm us, but to help us.
