Setting the Bar High
What is your goal for your life? What do you want to achieve in your life? We all have to answer that question in some way, even if we ignore it. God has given us life. We have to decide what we are going to do with it. The right way to live is to aspire to live the best life possible, like a high jumper setting his or her bar even higher than they think they can jump, so they can achieve the maximum. That is what Elisha did, when he was given this choice.(II Kings 2:9) I hope you will do the same thing.
Elisha asked for a double portion of the spirit of Elijah to rest upon him. This was a huge request. Elijah was not sure God would grant it, but He did. Elijah was the greatest prophet of God up to that time. The miracles that God allowed him to work were greater than anyone, except maybe Moses. Elisha had observed him up close and personal as his assistant. He was the best example of a believer he knew and his desire was to have twice as much of the same spirit that propelled Elijah to do God's will. God blessed him because of his request, and that is exactly what happened in Elisha's life.
Today, we should aspire to be like Jesus. That is setting the bar as high as possible, because He lived a sinless life. We need the power of the Holy Spirit to do that, but He is available for anyone who trusts Christ as Lord, and He is willing to fill us daily to give us power for life. However, we have to make it our goal to live each day in God's power and to be exactly like Jesus. Have you made that your goal in life? If not, I urge you to take that step today. Anything less does not honor Jesus as Lord of all and Lord of your life. Anything less is not the best life you can have, and that is what God wants for each of us.
Tomorrow, I intend to read II Kings 4-6.
