May 19 - Psalms 9-12
Psalm nine is filled with praise to God. Praise always focuses on the character of God. When we praise God we have things in the right perspective. Praise reminds us of the greatness of God as well as His righteousness. The wicked can't win, because our righteous God will not allow evil to triumph in the end. Praise reminds us that we are but men, and the Psalmist asks God to remind the nations of the same thing. Many lives are destroyed when they do not realize that they are not the center of the universe. Praise lets us remember and helps us tell others that God is the center of all.
Psalms ten and eleven proclaim the plight of those who do not trust God. The wicked do not seek God or even think of God. They think God has forgotten them. They think He will not require them to give an account of their lives. This is how Satan convinces them to pursue evil. However, the truth is that God does see them, and He will repay their wickedness. Even though the righteous people may suffer at the hands of the wicked for a while in this life, God will exalt the righteous in heaven and punish the wicked in hell.
It seems that David is falling for a lie of Satan in Psalm twelve. He thinks that there are very few godly men left. That is what Satan tells us to discourage us. However, if we look around, we will notice that God has many more followers than we might see at first. God protects the righteous and He spreads His word continually. People are coming to know Him all of the time. We might be aware of the wicked more because of their importance in this world order, but the truth is that God has many believers in this world. Don't let Satan discourage you in this way. Ask God to show you all of the believers around you. Then, rejoice in God's goodness to preserve righteousness on the earth in the face of much evil.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 13-16.
