Telling the New Generation

I am thankful for the generations of my family who came before me. Most of them were hard working people who were sincere in their faith in God. They did not just have faith in Jesus. They passed down their faith to their children and their children's children. This is a very important practice for each generation, because Christianity is always only one generation from extinction. If we don't influence the next generation to come to Jesus, there will not be any believers left once we are gone.

David realized this reality, and he made a solemn request from the Lord. (Psalm 71:18) He asked God not to abandon him in his old age, but to allow him to proclaim His power to the new generation, and to show God's mighty miracles to all who came after him. I hope that we can all relate to what David is saying here, even if we are not old and gray now. I pray we will never forget the new generation needs Jesus, too.

I am definitely getting old and, I have been gray for a long time. It is easy for me to sit around and tell stories about the past to my friends and family who are my age or older. I enjoy it very much. However, I want to still have a place in ministry and in passing on the gospel in my old age, and I realize the greatest need is among those who are much younger than I am. It is a challenge for me to relate to young people and young adults, but I know that is what I need to do.

Many of the young adults and even those who are approaching 50 years old are postmodern in their worldview. They do not really believe in absolute truth, since they don't really believe in God. They think truth is relative, so they can make up their own truth. The problem with postmodernism is that it doesn't work. That personal truth doesn't satisfy, only the absolute truth fulfills us. So those who are old and gray can share our salvation testimony and other testimonies of God's goodness and power with the new generation, and it is hard to argue with what they can see Jesus has done for us.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 72-74.
