Wise Counselors and Teachers

I would submit to you that we all need wise counselors and teachers. We need them for ourselves and for our family. Even in this digital age when we can find answers on the Internet, there is nothing as valuable as a person we can sit down with and talk through a difficult situation, knowing that person is wise, and he or she will be able to understand us and give us great insight into what we need to do. Also, we need teachers for us and for our children, who will teach the correct material and do it well.

King David had both of these areas covered in his time as king of Israel. I believe it helped him fulfill God's will in the right way. (I Chronicles 27:32) Jonathan, David's uncle, was a wise counselor to the king, a man of great insight, and a scribe. Jehiel the Hachmonite was responsible for teaching the king's sons. I believe the Bible gives us some very helpful information here that can help all of us. Let's investigate what it says.

David's uncle, Jonathan, was a wise counselor for him, and he had great insight. How did he develop those qualities that made him a great help to the king? He was a scribe. A scribe was a person who was skilled in copying the Scripture. Since it all had to be copied by hand, the scribes took great care to write it out correctly. They had a reverence for the Bible, and they understood it very well, because of their time writing it and studying it. I believe we can all have wisdom and great insight, if we will spend time in the Word of God, and not merely read it, but absorb the meaning.

When we do this, we begin to see how God sees things. That is wisdom. Then, we can use that wisdom to see great insights into the needs of our lives. The same is true for effective teachers. A teacher can teach academic subjects or spiritual truths. The best teachers combine the two, teaching spiritual insights as they teach math, science, and reading skills. This is the kind teachers we need for our children to mature fully and understand how life should be lived. That is why Christians schools are so important today.
