Asking the Lord

I don't know about you, but I encounter all kinds of problems and challenges every day. These are things that I am not sure how to handle. Sometimes, I take out my cell phone and search for the help I need there. Other times, I ask for help from those around me, or I call someone for help. However, a lot of times I will stop to ask the Lord what to do before I do anything else. I believe that is the right thing for all of us to do every time.

King Jehoshaphat of Judah was going with King Joram of Israel to attack Moab, but they had no water for the troops, and did not know what to do. (II Kings 3:11) King Jehoshaphat said they should ask the Lord by finding a prophet to consult the Lord for them. Elisha had taken over for Elijah, so they called upon him to ask the Lord, and the Lord gave them the answer in a miraculous way. We can't ever tell how the Lord will help us, but we need to turn to Him first like Jehoshaphat suggested.

In the Old Covenant God's Spirit did not live inside of all believers like He does today. That is why even the kings needed to call upon a prophet or a priest to get the answers from the Lord when they had problems or needs. The problem was that sometimes the kings called on idols, instead of depending on God. Their hearts were not set on God, but on the wrong things. We need to me sure that our hearts are set on God all day long, so that we naturally think of asking Him every time.

Now that we have the Holy Spirit in us, He is with us to guide us and empower us in every need we have.  We do not have to go to a priest or ask anyone else. We should be walking in the Spirit and allowing Him to fill us, so that we hear from Him very clearly. If we fail to confess our sins on a daily basis, and we fail to ask Him to fill us and control us, then, His voice is more faint, while Satan's voice is loud and clear. This is why many of us fail to ask God first, and we do the wrong thing. Let's decide to stay filled with the Spirit all of the time and depend on God fully.
