A Gentle Whisper
Have you ever noticed that sometimes we hear a gentle whisper even better than we hear loud shouting? I know we hear the loud noise of the shouting, but we don't really receive the message that is being spoken. When someone is close enough to speak to us in a gentle whisper, we listen closely and take in just what they are saying. Often, that is how God speaks to us. He doesn't have to shout. He just comes with a "still small voice" to get our full attention.
Elijah found this out when he was running from the evil queen, Jezebel. He was in a cave hiding when God came to him. (I Kings 19:12,13) There was an earthquake that shook everything, but God didn't speak through that or the fire that came after it. He spoke in a gentle whisper, and Elijah covered his face and went to the entrance of the cave. There he heard the Lord clearly say, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" We all need to hear clearly what the Lord is saying to us, too.
What are you doing today? It is Easter Sunday. Are you right where the Lord wants you to be in your life, or are you far away from His will? Are you actively serving Him, or are you running from Him and others, like Elijah was? We all need to acknowledge the Risen Christ and serve Him with all of our hearts To do this we must listen closely to God's gentle whisper every day and do just what He says.
I know for me I have to get in a quiet place and focus on God. I have to read the Word of God and ask the Spirit to illuminate it for me. I have to put aside all of the loud noises of this world and draw near to my Lord. I believe that will help all of us to hear that "still small voice" that I heard calling me the day I trusted Jesus, and that I have heard so many times since then. What a blessing to know that the Lord of all creation knows our names a speaks gently to us!
