Great Indecision

There were times in my life when I made some very good decisions. It was so satisfying to see a good outcome and to know that I did the right thing. At other times I have made some very bad decisions. It did not take long at all to figure out that I had done the wrong thing and that I would have to deal with the consequences. However, some of the worst times in my life were the times when I did not make any decision. I was paralyzed by indecision.

That is what happened to the tribe of Reuben when Deborah and Barak were calling the tribes of Israel to come together to fight against the Canaanites under Sisera. Deborah was inspired to write a song about this battle, and she called out the tribe of Reuben. (Judges 5:16) "Why did you stay at home among the sheepfolds - to hear the shepherds whistle for their flocks?" Yes, in the tribe of Reuben there was great indecision. We can all learn from this.

If we are so afraid of making the wrong decision that we do not make a decision at all, we have failed miserably. When we are stuck in indecision, we can't do the right thing, because we are doing nothing. We might try to convince ourselves that no decision was the best decision, but that is seldom if ever the case. It is giving up at a time when we need to be engaging in life one way or another. If we have a problem with indecision, we need to ask God to help us overcome this character flaw.

God is always there to show us the right decision, but often we don't even ask for His guidance. That is a double mistake. We need to ask God to give us the wisdom that His Word promises us in James 1:5. Then, we need to go ahead and decide. If it turns out to be the wrong decision, we can ask God to help us make things right. If it was the right decision, we receive His blessings for doing His will. Either way, we will not have the regrets of indecision.
