A New Heart
When we speak about our heart, we can mean it in two different ways. Of course, our heart is a physical organ that pumps the blood out to our whole body. It is essential for life. If our heart fails, we die. Then, the other way we speak of our heart is spiritual. Our heart is who we are as a person. It is our inner self. If our heart is bad spiritually, we are not doing well in our spiritual life. To have a blessed life, we have to receive a "new heart" from God.
That is what happened to Saul after he was anointed king by Samuel. (I Samuel 10:9) As Saul turned and started to leave, God gave him a new heart. Then, all of the signs Samuel had given him were fulfilled that day. God made Saul a new person. He changed his old self into a new self so he could be successful as the king of God's people. We all need for God to do this for us.
We are all born with a sinful nature. That was passed down to every one of us because of Adam and Eve's sin in the Garden of Eden. We are sinners, and our sins cause us to be cut off from God. We can't do anything to change our heart on our own. We have to go to the Lord and turn from our sins. When we do that, and we put our faith in Jesus to save us and change us, He gives us a new heart. We become new people.
This is what many people do not realize about salvation. It is not just a change in philosophy. It is not just trying harder to do what is right. It is actually becoming a new person. God gives us a new heart that is not a sinful heart, but a pure heart. Then, we have to do His will by the power of the Spirit to keep our new heart clean and free from sin's influences, so we can live the Christian life for His glory. It is glorious to receive a new heart from God. I pray each of us will experience that as we trust Jesus as Lord and Savior.
