Our Job Designated by God
Most of the time we get to choose the job we are going to do. We can pick one that we think we will like. Then, if we find out that we don't like it, or we are not well suited for it, we can change to another job. It takes some of us a while to find the right job for us and our family. However, there are times when we do not get to pick our job. Sometimes, our family decides for us. At other times God decides for us. Either way, we need to be content to do our job and do it well.
God singled out the tribe of Levi to have a particular job. They did not have a choice. (Numbers 1:50) God commanded that the Levites be put in charge of the Tabernacle of the Covenant, along with all of its furnishings and equipment. They had to carry the Tabernacle and its furnishings when they traveled, and they had to take care of it and camp around it. This was a huge responsibility given to them by God. I believe God has designated jobs for us, as believers, today.
It is great to be saved from our sins and to have eternal life. It is so comforting to know that we are going to heaven when we leave this earth. However, there is a lot more to the Christian life than just being forgiven and going on our own way to do whatever we want to do. Jesus is Lord of all. We surrender to Him when we get saved, so we are to do whatever He commands. One of the things that Jesus does is to designate a job for us.
The Spirit gives us the spiritual gifts He wants us to have. We don't get to pick. Then, we are to use those gifts to serve the Lord. We don't just get to pick how we are going to use them. We are to pray and seek the Lord's will for the kingdom job we do. Yes, this is true for every believer, not just pastors. God has a ministry for each of us, and we need to accept that role and do it well in the power of the Holy Spirit, no matter how large or small it is. Then, when we get to the Judgment, we will give an account to God about how we carried out what He gave us to do.
