Having a Lowly Job

Yesterday, I wrote about the fact that God assigns us our job, so we don't get to choose. We simply do the job He designates for us to the best of our ability in the power of the Spirit. However, today I want us to add another element to this. What if we get a lowly job from the Lord? What if we always work behind the scenes so no one sees what we do? How will we handle it, if we have a job that involves menial labor, and it doesn't seem very "spiritual?"

All of the divisions of the tribe of Levi were assigned tasks in caring for the Tabernacle and transporting it from place to place. (Numbers 4:24) The Gershonite clans were responsible for general service and carrying loads. That doesn't sound very exciting to me. They were the errand runners and the ones who had to carry the heavy loads. Their job was important because without them the Tabernacle could not be transported with the people. However, it was a lowly service for the Lord.

There are some jobs for us to do, as Christians, that are very "up front." There are those who preach, teach, and have important leadership positions in the church. Those jobs tend to get a lot of recognition, even though they are just a small part of the ministry of the Lord in the church. Those people can't do the ministry by themselves. It takes the whole family of believers working together to see people saved and the church growing all of the time. It takes people to clean the toilets, do the cooking, and arrange the furniture. But that is only a small part of all that must be done.

The truth is that Jesus came to serve, not to be served. (Mark 10:45) He took the job of the lowliest servant and washed His disciples feet. He accepted the worst job which was dying on the cross for the sins of the world. We are to be like Jesus. He never complained, He just did what the Father wanted Him to do. We need to do the same, changing diapers in the nursery, if we want children in our church. We must deal with unruly youth and love them anyway. We have to pray behind the scenes, even though no one knows what we are doing. Then, and only then, will God's work be done fully.
