Faith as a Mustard Seed

Many people do not understand faith. Some people think that it is a force, so if they have faith, they can accomplish whatever they want to accomplish. Faith is not a force. Faith is believing, trusting, or depending on something or someone. We can have faith in a person to do what we ask them to do. If that person is trustworthy and able to do it, then what we asked them to do will happen. Faith in God does the same thing.

Jesus' disciples we unable to cast out a demon from a man's son, and they asked Jesus why they had failed. (Matthew 17:20) Jesus told them it was because of their unbelief. He assured them that if they had faith as a mustard seed, they could say to a mountain move from here to there, and it would move. Nothing would be impossible for them. This verse it so important for us to understand real faith.

Unbelief is a lack of faith in God. It is when we do not trust Him to do what He said He would do. Faith is trusting what God has said. We have to have our faith based in the Word of God or what God has said to us directly. Then, whatever He has said will happen. It is His will, not our will that happens. However, He responds to our faith to cause His will to take place. God loves for us to listen to Him and to trust Him, so He rewards our faith.

However, it doesn't take a huge amount of faith. A mustard seed was the smallest seed. Jesus was saying if we have the smallest amount of faith in Him, we can see the impossible done, if that impossible thing is His will, and we are trusting in Him to do it. We don't get to move mountains or do the impossible things we want to do. That is not faith. That is our desire and the force of our will. We can't do those things apart from God. Therefore, we have to depend on Him or else a lot of things are impossible for us.
