Asking for the Impossible
There are things that we know are impossible for us, as humans. We can't jump off of a skyscraper and fly down to the ground on our own. We can't swim around the world without any assistance and without stopping to rest. We can't stop a train by standing on the tracks and catching it with our hands. However, as believers, we know Jesus could do any of these things. How many of us would have the faith to ask Him to allow us to do something we know is impossible for us?
Peter had that kind of faith. He wasn't perfect. He made many mistakes. However, when he saw Jesus walking on the water near their boat, and heard him speak to them, he asked for the impossible. (Matthew 14:28) Peter answered and said, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water." What a bold faith in that moment of time! Let's see what we can learn from Peter's faith here.
Peter asked for the impossible because He believed that Jesus was the Lord, not just a man. If we are going to have that kind of faith, we must be firmly committed to the fact that Jesus is Lord of all, the Creator of everything that exists in the universe. (John 1:3) We must know that He can do all things, except the wrong thing. I am not sure that we have that belief in Jesus all of the time, as we we should.
Then, we need to have the boldness to ask for Him to enable us to do the impossible. Of course, we can't just ask for anything we want. It has to be something Jesus would command us to do. It has to be His will for us. However, it takes us being willing to consider the impossible. It takes us being willing to get out of the boat, like Peter did when Jesus asked him to come. Then, like Peter walked on water, which was impossible for him, we can end up doing the impossible for the Lord, too.
