Getting What We Deserve
We live in a world that has been corrupted by sin. When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, their sin affected everything in the universe. That is why there are so many diseases, natural disasters, and other calamities with which we have to deal. However, sometimes we are suffering because of our own sins, not just the sin that has corrupted this world. We need to be sensitive to the Lord, because He will show us if that is the case.
Jerusalem was destroyed because of the sins of the people. Even the Babylonian captain of the guard knew that. (Jeremiah 40:2,3) As the captain of the guard took Jeremiah out of the prison, he told him that the Lord God of Israel had pronounced doom on Jerusalem, and now it had come to pass, just as He said it would. This happened because the people sinned against God and did not obey His voice. I wonder what could be happening to us right now because of our sins?
Some of us have marriage problems or problems with our children. Others have money problems, or they are suffering from some illness. In each case, it could be the sin that affects our world, but it could be God's way of punishing us for our sins. If it is our sins, God will make sure that we suffer until we seek Him and know why it is happening to us. Then, it is up to us to deal with our sins before it is too late.
The Bible is clear. The Holy Spirit will convict us of sin. That is His responsibility, and He does it well. However, some people are good at ignoring His voice like the people of Israel ignored God. We must sincerely ask the Spirit to show us our sins. Then, we confess each one specifically. (I John 1:9) We say what God would say about our sins, and we let Him know we are turning away from them. Then, God cleanses us, and He can set us free from the punishment we are receiving. I pray all of us will make sure we are right with God every day.
