Changing Our Mind
We all have the prerogative to change our minds after we have made a decision. I know I change my mind about certain decisions after I have made them. However, there are certain decisions we need to make and never change our minds about them after that. These decisions are the ones we make because God has commanded us or led us to make that decision. Changing our minds in those instances opens us to the anger of God.
That is what happened in Jeremiah's day. The Lord told the people to set free their male and female slaves. This was according to God's law about having Jewish people as their slaves. (Jeremiah 34:11) The people decided to do what God said, but then they changed their mind and took them back into subjection again. God was already upset with them because of their sins, and this change made things even worse.
When God has given us a command in His Word, or when He speaks to us about what we should do in a specific situation, we need to seriously consider what God has said and what we need to do. We need to obey Him as completely as possible and to be firm in that commitment. One of the worst things we can do is to be wishy washy and change our minds. That shows a serious lack of commitment to God. It shows that we want our way, not His way. It is open rebellion to God.
Changing our mind about the things we know God expects us to do is a sign of a very weak faith. Sometimes, it shows that we are living by our feelings and not by the facts of God's Word. It shows that we are not praying about what to do and letting the Spirit of God guide us. We are deciding that we know better than God. God has to punish us as disobedient children when that is the case. I pray we all will decide to obey the Lord and never change our mind after that.
