A Still Small Voice

When I was growing up, my family attended Peachcrest Baptist Church in Decatur Georgia. Bro. Arwood was the pastor. He was an excellent preacher and teacher. I learned a lot from him as I was growing up. I still remember a lot of things that he said and the way he said them. He would often refer to hearing that "still small voice." I know I've heard it. Have you?

Elijah was running from the wicked queen, Jezebel, after getting worn down from his long run back to Jezreel from Mt. Carmel. When he finally got to Mt. Horeb, the Lord told him to stand before the mountain. God did not speak to him through a strong wind, an earthquake, or a fire. (I Kings 19:12) However, He did speak to Elijah very directly through a still small voice. God made Himself very clear to Elijah, and He does the same for us.

I think sometimes we want God to work a miracle to show us the way He wants us to go. We want Him to speak to us in an audible voice, or even send us a letter. We think that is what it takes to be sure that we know what He is saying, but none of that is true. God is a master communicator. He knows how to speak to us, not through our ears, but through our heart. He speaks to us deep within our soul.

I am sure we have all heard that still small voice. We might have tried to dismiss it at first, but them it came again. We might have been determined to block it out, because we did not want to hear what anyone else had to say. We just wanted to do things our way. However, God persisted, out of His love for us, and we heard His voice, still and small. Then, it was up to us to listen and obey what the God of the universe was saying to us.

Tomorrow, I intend to read I Kings 21-22 and II Kings 1-3.
