The Kindness of God
Kindness is an attribute of God. It is one dimension of the fruit of the Spirit that the Lord develops in us after our salvation, as we walk in the Spirit. Of course, the meanest unbeliever in the world can decide to be kind toward another person. However, there is just something very extraordinary about the kindness of God, both as he lavishes it on us, and as we share it with others.
David's closest friend, Jonathan, had been killed in battle with his father and brother. Since they had a covenant of friendship together that extended to their families, David sought to find a member of the family who was still alive. (II Samuel 9:3) David, asked if there was a member of the house of Saul to whom he could show the kindness of God. Ziba told him that there was one son of Jonathan, Mephibosheth, who was lame in his feet. David brought him into his home and gave him the royal treatment.
That is really what God does for us, especially when we know Christ as our Lord and Savior, but God is kind to all people. God causes the rain to fall on the just and the unjust. He gives us all kinds of blessings each day. We have air to breathe and food to eat. God comes to us and speaks to us, showing us His love for us and how He gave His Son to die for our sins. That was the greatest kindness ever. Some people reject Jesus, but it is not because God has not kindly revealed Himself to them.
Then, just think about the kindness of God for all eternity. God gives us an eternal body that will never get sick or die. Jesus has prepared a place for us to live in God's heaven for eternity. We will continue to enjoy God's kindness forever, as He feeds us and provides all that we need. Let's remember that since God has been and will be so kind to us, we need to show His bountiful kindness to others, just like David did for Mephibosheth.
