Just a Vapor
Sometimes when I am doing my fast walking in the morning I see a very beautiful sight. When the conditions are just right a vapor appears over the fields, and the moonlight makes it radiate with light. It is amazing to see this sight, and when I see it, I have to take note of it well because I know it won't last long until the conditions change, and the vapor is gone as quickly as it appeared.
The Bible uses this analogy to give us a very important truth about our life. (James 4:14) The fact is that we do not know what our life will be like tomorrow. For we are just a vapor that appears for a little while, and then it vanishes away. This is a profound picture of our life that should prepare us to relish every day we are able to wake up and live another day on this earth.
God knows the number of our days. The problem is that we do not know that bit of information. The truth is that we may or may not wake up in this world tomorrow. In fact, we could have an accident or a stroke today and pass into eternity. This is just the nature of human life on this earth. We are a vapor. We are born and grow older each day, but we may or may not live a long time.
One of my best friends from school, Corliss Wade, died at age 18 or 19 from acute leukemia. She thought she had a cold one day, the next day she went to the doctor with flu symptoms, and the next day she died. In contrast to her I am now 69, going on 70, years old. However, when I look back, my life seems very short. See what I mean. This truth should make us seize every day, make sure we know Jesus as our Savior, and do our best to glorify God in all we do.
