Growing as Disciples of Jesus
A disciple is a follower of Jesus. When we say that we are following Jesus, we mean that we are trying to learn as much from Him as possible, and we are modeling our life after His life. We are literally walking through life as close to what He would do as possible. It does take the Lord's power, but we have to decide to believe in Him and to follow Him every day.
When a group of Jews decided to believe in Jesus, He gave them some basic instructions on how to be growing disciples. (John 8:31-32) Jesus was saying to the Jews who had believed in Him, "If you continue in My word, then you are truly My disciples, and you shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free." This is a great action plan for us, as disciples of Jesus.
We get to know Jesus through the Word of God. The more we read the Bible and understand it, the more we know what Jesus would say and how Jesus would act in certain situations. Then, we can say and do those things by the power of the Spirit. When we do that, we are truly His disciples. There is no better way to get to know how to follow Jesus.
Once we know the Word of God, we know the truth about everything in this life and in this world. When we live by the truth of God, we are set free from the bondage of sin, and we are free to do the will of God instead of doing what everyone else is doing. That is real freedom, and it comes through continuing in God's Word and being a genuine follower of Jesus.
