Offerings for the Lord

When we give an offering, we take something that belongs to us, and we freely give it to someone else. It is a gift given for a purpose. It is to be given sincerely from our heart. This is true when we give an offering to another person or to the Lord. Yes, the Lord does call on us to give offerings to His church, also. Our offerings show our commitment to the Lord, to His church, and to others.

There are two full chapter in the book of Numbers that detail the offerings of the sons of Israel. God is clear about this. (Numbers 28:2) He told Moses to command the sons of Israel to be careful to present to Him His offering, a food offering by fire, a soothing aroma to God, given at the appointed time. So what are we supposed to give as offerings to God today?

As Christians, we do not give burnt offerings to the Lord, but we are to give to Him from our hearts. We are to give a continual sacrifice of praise to God. We do this by giving Him the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name. (Hebrews 13:15) We are to do this every day as individual believers and as we worship with others on the Lord's Day.

Also, we are to give ourselves, our bodies, to the Lord as a living sacrifice. (Romans 12:1) This sacrifice is to be a holy sacrifice, so we are to confess our sins and live a holy life before Him. When we live that holy life and give ourselves to Him, we are an acceptable sacrifice. This is not something extra we are supposed to do. It is our reasonable service of worship to God.
