Inquiring of the Lord

King Saul and his sons were all killed by the Philistines on the same day. David had been running from Saul for a long time, since he wanted to kill David. Now, the fleeing was over, and David needed to decide what to do next. He had been anointed to be the next king by Samuel years before, but how would the transition take place? I think we have all been in situations like this. We know we need to move forward, but how? I wonder if we did the right thing? David did the right thing. (II Samuel 2:1) David stopped before doing anything else, and he inquired of the Lord. This was a common practice for David. God answered David's question about going to a town in Judah, where he was from. God said, "Go." Then, David asked God where to go. God said, "Hebron." Then, David went there with his men to follow the guidance of the Lord and see what happened next. I believe we can all learn from how David inquired of the Lord.

When we need to know God's direction for our life, we need to earnestly ask Him. If He sees our heart and knows that we are sincerely wanting to know His will, God will answer us. One key is to not ask God for our will to be done. We should seek to know His will. It is easy to pray for God to do what we want Him to do. That is not the best place to start. We need to submit to what God wants us to do, no matter what it is. Then, once God points us in a certain direction, we begin to ask Him to show us the specifics of what He desires for us to do. Again, when we inquire of God like this, He will answer us. Prayer is not just us talking to God. It is a conversation with God. He is the Lord, so we are inquiring of the Lord of all to show us, as His servants, what to do. God loves for us to pray like this. When we do, God moves in our lives, Is that your normal practice? Do you go to the Lord for His will first, or do you try to figure it out by yourself? We will never get life right if we do not fully follow the Lord by inquiring of Him first each step of the way.
