Ignorance is No Excuse

Many people, both unbelievers and believers, are ignorant of the things of God. The reason for this in many cases is that they do not read the Word of God enough to know what it says. Some people who go to church don't ever read the Bible during the week. All of this adds up to a huge amount of ignorance about the will of God, what to do and what not to do. Moses knew this was the case in his day, too. Therefore, he was inspired to tell the Israelites that even if a person was unaware that he or she had done any of the things the Lord commanded not to be done, that person would still bear his or her punishment. (Leviticus 5:17) This is a sobering reality for all of us.

Why do bad things happen to Christians? Yes, sometimes the Lord is allowing Satan to give us trouble. He does this, so we will turn to the Lord for help and grow stronger in our faith in the Lord. However, many other times, the bad things happen to us, as believers, because we have sinned by breaking God's commands, and we are having to bear God's punishment for that sin. We can't protest to God by saying that we didn't know it was wrong. God put all we need to know and do in His Word, the Bible. If we are ignorant of what God has told us, it is our fault, not His. Of course, the remedy is easy. We just begin to read and study God's Word from the beginning to the end, so we will know what God has plainly told us. Then, we do what He says to do, and we stop doing what He says not to do. It is up to us. I pray we will never try to plead ignorance, but we will follow God's Word, because all of His commands are for our good.
