God is__________

How can we ever describe God? He is so awesome in every way. We shouldn't focus on physical attributes, since God, the Father, doesn't have a body. He is Spirit. However, He is a Person. We can know Him and interact with Him in many ways. He is an expert at revealing Himself to us. He shows Himself to everyone who comes into this world. So if someone asked us to fill in the blank, "God is___________," what should we say? Yes, there are many answers since so God is so multi-faceted. The psalmist tackled this task to show us three of the ways to fill in this blank. (Psalm 100:5) I think his response is very correct and important, because he was inspired to write it down for us to ponder.

God is sheer beauty. Most translations simply say that "God is good." Good is a fine word, but it can be taken in so many ways that it can be too general to give a precise description.  The Message translation emphasizes one meaning of good in Hebrew which is "pleasant to the senses or beautiful." The people who saw God's glory on the throne in heaven gave us a picture of many colors and bright lights, which are pleasant to the senses and beautiful. Also, when God reveals Himself to us we find Him very pleasant, unless He comes in judgment. God is all generous in love, said the psalmist. The word in Hebrew is Chesed. It means covenant love, mercy, or faithfulness. It is hard to get the meaning into a few English words. God is very generous in love, because He is love, and His love is forever. He always treats everyone in love, even when He punishes us, because He wants us to get right with Him. Finally, God is loyal always. This word emphasizes His faithfulness which is from generation to generation. God is always loyal and faithful to those who trust Him, and He always keeps His word. See what I mean? The psalmist described God, as a person who really had experienced God is many ways, and he wanted us to see His complete goodness, love, and faithfulness. I pray that is how we all know Him.
