Those Who Avoid Light

After God created the heavens and the earth, He said, "Let there be light, and there was light." Light is very good. It has all types of benefits for plants, animals, and people. Most of us love light, and we do not like being in the dark, except for sleeping and maybe watching movies. However, there are a large group of people who avoid the light. They want to live their lives under the cover of darkness, because they are set on doing evil, and they do not want to be detected. Job told us about these people, and the fact that they scorn the light-filled path. (Job 24: 13) What Job had noticed has many implications for us all of the time.

When we have light, we can see and be seen. That is why those who want to do well, most often, do it in the light, not in darkness. However, people who are set on evil go out in the dark to do it. Some folks say, "Nothing good happens when people are out after 11 PM." Of course, they mean that is when a lot of the crimes and mischief take place, so we need to stay inside our homes then. Also, light has a spiritual significance. It represents being able to see the truth of God and understand His will. There are many people who avoid spiritual light, too. They don't read the Bible or go to churches that teach God's truth, because they want to stay in the dark spiritually. That helps them not to experience as much guilt over their deeds and words, which are sinful. People who want to do God's will, run to the light of the Lord. Those who are set on doing their own will, run from all spiritual light. Therefore, we can tell a lot about a person by how he or she fells about light, both physical and spiritual. We must beware of those who avoid the light and scorn the light-filled path. We need to help them see the light of the Lord and come to Him. That is our responsibility as the light of the world.
