Talking Without Knowing What You are Talking About

It is easy for most of us to talk about things which we do not really understand. It is tempting to jump to conclusions about our situations and say things that we find out later to be untrue. Often, this happens when we face a problem or an emotional issue. It is our emotions speaking, more than our understanding. Job was guilty of doing just that. Finally, when God answered Job, He asked him why he was confusing the issue, why he was talking about things he did not know about. Then, he told Job to stand up. He was going to ask Job some questions, and He wanted some straight answers. (Job 38:1-8) Think about this trap Job fell into for a minute with me. I believe it will help us out, so we do not do this.

How much of the knowledge in the universe do you possess yourself, in your own brain? Do you think it is even 1% of all of the knowledge of everything? I don't think any of us possess even that much knowledge. We mostly know a fairly good amount about the things we think and do one our own, and the things we experience around us from other individuals. Therefore, when we draw conclusions based on our very limited knowledge, we are speaking about things of which we really don't understand, if we speak on things outside of those situations. That is why we need to be very careful not to say "always" or "never." We need to speak, making sure God and others know when it is just our opinion, and we should not base our decisions on our own opinions. That is why we have the Word of God, the Bible, and the Holy Spirit, to show us God's understanding of the things we need to know. That way, if we base what we say and do on His Word and wisdom, we know we are speaking truth. In any other situation, we are very fallible, and we should not be dogmatic. Job did not have this luxury, because He lived before the Bible was written, so God was showing Job this truth when He spoke with Him. God doesn't do that as often with us, since we have the Bible and the Spirit to guide us.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Job 39-41.
