Ignorance is No Excuse

Most of us know that God is love. That is how we like to think of Him. However, we often forget that He is holy, too. If we forget His holiness, we might think that God will overlook our unintentional sins because of His love. That is not the case at all. God hates all sins, but some sins have greater consequences than other sins. King David and Uzzah found that out very suddenly when God broke out against Uzzah and killed him for touching the Chest, the ark of the covenant. (I Chronicles 13:9,10) David had instructed them to bring the Chest to Jerusalem on a new cart, and Uzzah was just trying to help. That is what made God's anger so hard to understand, so that even David got angry with God. Please, let me explain this so we will not do the same thing David did and be punished by God in our ignorance.

There are several words for sin in the Bible. Most of them mean to do something we know is wrong by going against God's Word or being rebellious in some way. However, the Bible teaches that sin is anything that falls short of God's will. It is any time we fail to do what God says in His Word, even if we are unaware of what He has said. This is the reason why people all around the world who have never seen a Bible or read one are still guilty of sin before God and need a Savior, Jesus Christ. It also means that ignorance is no excuse for sin. David should have checked God's Word and moved the Chest as God commanded. Then, this would not have happened. Uzzah should have made sure of the same thing. They acted in ignorance, but God's clear command was still violated, so He acted in line with His holiness. Most sins don't end in immediate death, but all sins have consequences, so it shows us how important it is to know God's Word and to follow it completely. I hope this causes us to fear God as we should and as David did after this incident. Then, we will take all sins as seriously as God does, and that will help us live in the center of God's will.
