Commendable Qualities for Our Sons
Parents are responsible for raising our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. This takes making sure we know what the Lord wants us to do and how to do it. We have God's Word to lead us in this area. It also takes knowing our children well, so we can adapt our nurturing and admonition to their particular personality and needs. This is a huge task that takes much prayer and persistence. However, it is very satisfying when we see that our sons and daughters have turned out to be godly adult men and women, who can do the same thing for their children. The sons of Asher were commended by the Lord for their godliness in several areas. They were responsible, excellent in character, brave in battle, and good leaders. (I Chronicles 7:40) This is a good list of qualities for any sons to attain as we raise them in the Lord.
One of the biggest signs of maturity is being responsible in life. When we see a son who works hard to take care of his needs and the needs of his family that is a great joy. There are too many people today who lack this quality, and it is a great detriment to them and their families in so many ways. Going hand in hand with being responsible is being excellent in character. Character is how we do what we do. It is living righteously according to God's will, loving others as Jesus would, and being sensitive to the needs of others, instead of being self-centered. It is also being truthful in all we do. Character will take a son a long way. Being brave is very important as well, even if a son never goes to battle. Men need to take risks at times for themselves and their families to succeed. Bravery is standing strong in God's strength to do whatever needs to be done to accomplish the right outcome. Finally, God intends for men to be leaders in the home and in the church, as well as in other areas of society. Good leaders serve the ones they lead, and they lead by example, not by being a tyrant. Just think of how our culture and our country would be changed if all of our sons had these qualities instilled in them by the Lord through their parents. I pray we will do our part to see this happen.
